When you envision your dream home, you likely think about the marble kitchen island, the floor to ceiling glass, or the way the morning sun hits the terrace. But after decades of designing for the elite of Australia, we have discovered that the most important building material isn’t something you can buy at a stone yard.

It is your attitude.

In our latest podcast episode, we tell the story of two identical projects that finished with two very different endings. It is a tale of two philosophies: The Doubtfires versus The Trustians.

Two Professionals. Two Masterpieces. Two Different Worlds.

Imagine two couples, both highly successful doctors or lawyers. Both want a high end WOLF home. Both have the budget to achieve it.

The Doubtfires signed their contract in a heartbeat. They were in a rush to start and acted slightly naïve to gain extra assurance. However, as the project progressed, their fear of being taken for a ride became a self fulfilling prophecy. They used guilt as a negotiation tool and eventually pushed the architect aside to manage the build themselves.

The Trustians were different. They took their time at the start. They read the contract line by line and asked the tough questions early. But once they signed, they stayed true to the brand. They understood the Extra Cheese Principle: if you want a premium addition to your project, you pay the premium for the expertise.

The Consultant Chaos

The podcast dives deep into the moment the Doubtfires began to panic. In an attempt to save money and gain control, they hired a small army of external specialists to go over work the architect had already resolved:

A Project Manager to oversee the experts
An Interior Decorator to rethink the palette
Lighting and Acoustic Specialists to add their two cents
Landscapers to reimagine the outdoor flow

While the Trustians were on holiday receiving seamless updates via Zoom, the Doubtfires were drowning in decision fatigue. They paid significantly more in extra fees only to create a too many cooks scenario that delayed the build and soured the experience.

The BBQ versus The Divorce

Both homes were completed to a world class standard. Both won awards. Both were featured in the press.

The Trustians celebrated with a BBQ for the entire design and build team. They love their life in their new home. The Doubtfires, however, ended their journey in a bitter divorce, selling their masterpiece to move into cookie cutter homes. The house was perfect, but the process had destroyed the joy of living in it.
