Wolf Architects is widely known across Australia for designing spectacular residential spaces. But our founder and artistic director, Taras Wolf, has a theory: a true designer can design absolutely anything. Clothes, parties, houses, or in this case, catchy pop songs.

So, we are officially stepping into the music industry. Please lower your eyebrows, grab a beverage, and let us introduce you to our brand new YouTube channel: Music_by_Wolf. We want you to get excited, subscribe, and maybe even buy our albums when they eventually hit iTunes and Spotify.

Here is the glorious, slightly nerdy, and entirely joyful story of how we got here.

The Architect Who Did Literally Everything Else First

To understand the music, you have to understand the bloke behind it. Taras is a highly regarded architect, but apparently, designing award winning houses simply did not take up enough hours in the day.

He is a true polymath with a background in painting, sculpture, graphic design, and photography. Oh, and for 15 years, he was a professional ballroom dancer who trained, competed, and coached internationally, even owning his own dance school in the late 1990s. Because why not?

Taras has always believed that a designer’s mind is universal. If you can make a living room look incredible, you can probably figure out how to arrange a melody.

The 80s, High School Bands, and a Floppy Disk Hoard

As a young creative in the 1980s, Taras got his hands on his first keyboard. This sparked a lifelong obsession with synthesisers. He loved how one chunky plastic machine could pretend to be a piano, a guitar, or some bizarre digital space laser.

He spent his youth playing keyboards in various high school bands, soaking up the undeniable cool factor of being on stage. But by the late 80s, playing covers was not cutting it anymore. He had the overwhelming urge to create his own original compositions. As synthesisers evolved into complete workstations with built in drum machines and sequencers, Taras became the ultimate one man band.

Inspired by digital pioneers like the Pet Shop Boys, he spent countless late nights writing instrumental tracks and Latin Ballroom tunes for his own floor shows. He eventually amassed nearly a hundred original tunes, all safely backed up on the peak of technological storage: floppy disks and demo tapes.

While adult life, family, and a booming architectural practice eventually took over, the synth obsession never died. At its peak, Taras had a meticulously curated collection of over 50 rare, mint condition vintage synthesisers taking up space. He has since sold off about half of them, presumably so he could walk through his house without tripping over a Roland Jupiter.

From Elevator Music to AI Bangers

For years, those brilliant 80s tracks lived a very quiet life. Taras digitised them, but let us be honest, the raw analog tracks sounded a bit basic by modern standards. So, they were given a very special job: they became the official Wolf Architects hold music. If you ever called our office and were put on hold, you were actually listening to a Taras Wolf original.

But today, we have AI. And Taras is using it to bring those dusty floppy disk tracks out of the background, polishing them up, and finally giving them the vocals they always deserved.

The Elephant in the Room: Is AI Music Cheating?

Naturally, the sceptics will cringe at the idea of AI producing music with singers who do not actually exist. But Taras has a brilliantly logical, architecturally sound defence for this:

• The Pet Shop Boys Precedent: Back in 1989, when purely digital acts emerged with just a singer and a bloke on a keyboard, purists lost their minds. They said drum machines were cheating and lacked soul. Yet, that sound defined a generation. AI is just the next calculator or internet, a new tool waiting to be used.

• The Madonna and MJ Effect: Think about megastars like Michael Jackson or Madonna. Absolute legends. But how often did you see them sweating over a guitar solo or sitting behind a piano on stage? Their genius was not in playing an instrument; it was their visionary minds, their style, and the energy they channelled.

• The Architectural Staff Analogy: As the artistic director, Taras openly admits he no longer does much physical drawing. He oversees a team of staff who use complex software that he would not have a clue how to navigate. The staff are essentially biological AI, processing his vision and following orders. The design is still 100 percent his, even if he did not click the mouse. Furthermore, very few young architects today can actually draw by hand anymore. It is a dying skill, but nobody cares as long as the finished building looks amazing. AI music will eventually be viewed the exact same way.

Huge Respect for the Real Deal

Let us be incredibly clear: Taras has massive respect for true artists who are gifted with the ability to sing and play instruments. That is a truly special talent, and he has no desire to take anything away from them.

Taras will be the first to tell you that he cannot sing to save his life, and it would take him decades to learn to shred on a guitar. But why should a lack of vocal cords or nimble fingers disadvantage a creative mind? If you have the ears to know exactly what you want to hear, why shouldn’t you be allowed to design it?

And for the record, Taras makes absolutely zero claims that his music is a masterpiece. He is not trying to win a Grammy. The music he produces brings him immense joy. It makes him happy, it moves him, and he is totally comfortable if real musicians think it is amateur hour. He is just thrilled to have a new technological toy to express his creativity.

Maths, Emotion, and 100 Percent Human Lyrics

Taras has a very specific philosophy when it comes to songwriting. He believes music is pure maths. Because the human ear only hears a limited range of frequencies, and there are only so many chords, every melody technically already exists in the universe. A composer just channels it.

But emotion? Emotion is infinite.

Because of this, Taras insists on writing all of his own lyrics. No AI assistance allowed in the poetry department. Whether he is writing about a true story, something totally made up, or something delightfully cheesy, the words are all his. To Taras, a song is a winner if you hear it once and can instantly sing the chorus back.

What to Expect on the Channel

We are starting small and simple on YouTube with Phase 1: The Studio Sessions. These are polished instrumental tracks, perfect for playing in the background while you work. It is exactly what we play in the Wolf Architects studio to keep the creative juices flowing.

From there, we will expand into songs with vocals across a wild variety of genres: upbeat dance, synth pop, heartfelt country, chill beats, and some deeply experimental stuff.
