A Whole New World of Design: WOLF Architects and Our AI Adventure

Artificial Intelligence is no longer just some sci fi movie plot; it is a massive part of how the world works today. From ordering groceries to writing emails, it is everywhere, and architecture is definitely joining the party!

At WOLF Architects, we love looking to the future, and we are proudly riding the AI wave. In fact, it has been less than twelve months since we first wrote about using AI in our practice, and it is honestly wild to look back. In that short time, we have learned and used more AI than we ever imagined during our first go around. The technology is evolving at lightning speed. If we have come this far in under a year, who knows what kind of mind blowing tools we will be playing with in another years time!

It is a thrilling ride, but we know new tech can also bring up a few worries. So, let us chat about how we are using AI, why it is actually amazing news for your next project, and why the robots are not taking our jobs just yet.

Dodging the Fear Factor: The New Normal

Whenever something revolutionary comes along, people naturally get a bit jumpy. Remember when the internet first landed in our homes? Everyone was asking if it was safe, or if physical books were doomed forever. Today, we cannot even navigate to the supermarket without it.

AI is exactly the same. Platforms like ChatGPT are practically family members now, and anyone not using them feels a bit left out. AI in design is heading exactly the same way. Soon, it will be totally normal for everyone to play around with it.

For our clients, AI is not going to replace us. Instead, it is the ultimate upgrade to your trusty scrapbook or Pinterest board.

• The Old Way: Bringing in magazine clippings and trying to describe a vibe.

• The New Way: Whipping up an AI generated concept image that perfectly captures your mood, colour scheme, and big dreams.

This makes our job of understanding your vision so much easier. It is clear, it is fun, and it gets us all on the same page instantly.

Cocreation: We Are Not Putting Our Feet Up

With clients generating their own brilliant ideas, you might be wondering, does this mean the architects at WOLF are just kicking back and doing less work?

Not a chance!

When we send a design concept your way, you now have the tools to make tweaks and bounce ideas back to us super fast. Want to see that living room wall in emerald green velvet? You can ask AI to show you in a flash.

This means we are now truly cocreating. We have always believed the best designs come from a strong partnership with the client, but in the past, you were limited by not having fancy 3D software or a degree in sketching. AI changes all that. We still do the heavy lifting to make the building stand up and feel beautiful, but your feedback is sharper and more visual than ever.

Kissing Design Abandonment Goodbye

Ask anyone in a creative field, and they will tell you about the tragedy of Design Abandonment. Whether you are painting a masterpiece or designing a luxury home, artists can always see ways to tweak, polish, and perfect their work.

The big villain? Time.

Budgets run dry and deadlines loom, meaning we eventually have to put the pencils down. It does not mean the design is bad, it just means reality got in the way.

Well, AI is our new superpower against the clock. Because it speeds up the tedious parts of testing variations, we can get much closer to perfection. Instead of drawing two structural options, we can test fifty. We get to refine every little detail before a single brick arrives on site. You end up with a spectacularly better home, and we get to satisfy our perfectionist streaks!

The Embarrassing Sketch and The Calculator

Because AI is out there for everyone, the entire architectural profession has been put on notice. We have to lift our game!

Think back to the old days when hand sketching was everything. Imagine if a client walked into an office, grabbed a pen, and drew a better building than the architect sitting across the desk. Absolutely mortifying! Today, AI is that pen. If a client rocks up with stunning, hyper realistic AI images and the architect cannot keep up, that is a huge problem. We must embrace this tech so we can stay ahead of the curve.

It all comes down to the classic calculator analogy:

• The Amateur: Hand a calculator to a child, and they can do some basic maths and have a bit of fun.

• The Master: Hand that same calculator to a university mathematician, and they will use it to solve massive equations and chart the stars.

It is the same with AI. A client can type in a prompt and get a gorgeous picture of a house. But it takes an experienced WOLF architect to know exactly what to ask the AI, and then use those results to figure out structural integrity, environmental flow, and true spatial magic.

A Holistic Creative Playground: Introducing Music by WOLF

To give you another example of how AI is making us even more holistic and creative, we recently launched Music by Wolf Architects. Now, we are not claiming to be trained musicians, but design is completely universal. We know how to design spaces, so we can certainly design music! We have already produced dozens of very professional songs and instrumental tracks.

Many of these tunes accompany beautiful videos of our projects, which we were also able to produce from limited materials through AI.

Does it mean that we are cheating or copying? Of course not, because everything is still totally directed by us. We have a distinct vision for how a video should look, and we manually stitch it together with movie making software. Our music is done in the exact same way. We consider the themes, the sounds, and the structure. And by the way, 99 percent of our lyrics are non AI generated! So in essence, all the material is original.

Had we an abundance of money and time in the past, we could have hired the right people to help us produce all of this, which is exactly why we could not do it before. AI has simply enabled us to express way more creativity for a fraction of the time and cost. Perhaps soon we can just throw a few images together and get AI to make sense of it all and build a whole movie, but for now, we still really like doing some things relatively slower.

We are not shying away from AI; we are having an absolute blast with it. It is pushing our high end designs to incredible new heights, and we are so excited to invite you to sit beside us at the drafting table to cocreate the future!
